A Little Warm Weather and A Few Hungry Deer

The temperature has made its into the 50s the past couple of days.  It's amazing what a little warm weather can do for the psyche.  It's been a really cold winter and there has been snow on the ground since mid-November.  We had our first snow this Fall/Winter in October.  There was no Indian summer like you would expect in late October or early November.  There have been many days when we leave for work in the morning and the temperature is in the single digits.

But I wouldn't live anywhere else.  We have bald eagles living down by the river.  We have lots of bears, turkeys  and squirrels; the occasional pheasant and rabbit; and, of course, deer.  I'm not one to feed the wildlife (the winter keeps the population in check), but I figure that if they've made it this far, I'll give a hand so they'll make it to the Spring.  The folks across the street have been putting out deer corn and we've put out a good quantity of deer apples (apples we bought from an orchard that weren't good for anything except feed).  We went shopping today and when we go home,  Sean was waiting in the driveway and feeding the carrots.  They were walking right up to him and taking the carrot (hell, the cat won't come that close to me).  One was a tiny yearling.  I'm surprised she made it through the winter.

This is a little one.  Surpeised she made it through the winter.

Hopefully we can get into Spring, but I realize that 3 days ago, it was 6 degrees when I left for work.  Katie has a lot of seedlings growing in the house waiting on some warm soil--tomatoes, cucumbers, beans, peas, etc.  I may have to buy a greenhouse soon.

Absolutely beautiful! I found your blog because of the movie "Soylent Green"... I was amazed at how many others even knew of this film!

Love the pics. I live in Erie, PA and just spent a fair amount of time on Presque Isle watching the deer out searching for food too.

What a beautiful world we live in!
Thanks for sharing your pics and your thoughts!
