Field Gray

(The dust cover on the left is from the US edition, on the right from the UK edition.)

Just finished Field Gray, a Bernie Gunther novel by Philip Kerr, and I wasn't disappointed. It's a crime/mystery series of novels set mostly in Berlin, but also in other areas of Europe and South America in the 1930's to 1950's. Mr. Kerr's writing is not dissimilar to that of Raymond Chandler, but his attention to detail is much keener. As I read Bernie's lines in the novel, I can envision Humphrey Bogart mouthing the words. Reviews of the novel are here and here.

An interview with Mr. Kerr done on NPR can be found here.

If you're interested in reading the Bernie Gunther series, start with Berlin Noir. It contains the first 3 novels in the series (March Violets, The Pale Criminal, and A German Requiem).
