The Price of War

Click here for an interesting look at the "human, economic, and environmental" effects of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.  It was launched under the auspices of the Eisenhower Institute at Gettysburg College and directed by Neta Crawford of Boston University (got my Ed.M. there) and Catherine Lutz of Brown University.  Some interesting facts:

  • At least 137,000 civilians have been killed in Afghanistan and Iraq.
  • The DoD uses 4,600,000,000 gallons of fuel each year.
  • More than 550,000 veterans of the 2 wars have filed disability claims.
  • If war spending continues as forecast, the country can expect to have paid $1 trillion interest by 2020.
