Columbus Underground received an anonymous tip several days ago that the Grand Valley Dale Ballroom, located at 1590 Sunbury Road, was canceling scheduled events and appeared to be closing. The owners confirmed today through an electronic press release:
“It is with deep regret and a heavy heart that VDB Enterprises must announce we will not be operating, managing, booking or hosting events at Valley Dale Ballroom effective immediately,” stated facility manager Martin Finta IV via email this afternoon. ”We were not able to overcome the landlord’s long renovation construction period, timing, other issues and the current condition of the venue.”
Finta stated that his organization is currently working with clients to discuss alternative event venue options and refunding deposits. Concerns were initially raised by those affected by cancellations who have yet to receive returned deposits, including the source who contacted us initially.
“I asked around in a private local wedding professionals group and it sounds like there’s been a rash of last minute cancellations for January and February events with everything from sewer issues again to renovations being the official reason,” stated our source, who preferred to not disclose their name. “Other rumors include management being behind on rent and getting the boot and also management clearing the space of all valuable fixtures before taking off.”
The building was originally constructed in 1918, and features a large 2,000 square foot dance floor.

“Valley Dale is a significant piece of musical history in Columbus — it was THE spot for big band and ballroom dancing in the 30s and 40s and CBS radio broadcasted nationally from there for a time,” stated our source. “Sinatra played there. The venue and the surrounding area has fallen on hard times in recent years but the actual facility is beautiful – it’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places.”
There is no word on whether the venue will reopen under new management in the future.
